What separates them is origin — one formed deep in the earth over a very long time, the other in a controlled chamber over weeks — and, as a consequence, price. Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. This is the part most worth understanding before anything else. A lab-grown diamond is crystallized carbon with the same cubic structure as a mined one. It is not a simulant. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are simulants — different materials that imitate the look of diamond. A laboratory diamond is the material itself, grown rather than excavated. To the eye, under a loupe, and to most gemological instruments measuring brilliance and fire, a lab diamond vs natural diamond of equal quality are indistinguishable.
